As most of you probably know, there was an international workshop on CFD for ship hydrodynamics in Gothenburg Sweden in December last year. The theme of the workshop was to have the willing participants submit their CFD results for three ships (KVLCC2, DTMB 5415, and KCS) at a range of conditions (e.g., fixed and free sinkage and trim, with and without incoling waves, etc.). Our group (DTMB, ARL Penn State, Univ of Mich) jointly participated in the workshop with results obtained using a custom version of OpenFOAM®. And our results consistently came out to be among the best for all the cases we submitted the results for (KVLCC2, DTMB 5415), beating others including major commercial codes and in-house codes. For details, find and talk to your colleagues who attended the workshop. They should have access to the proceedings.
Since the geometries of the workshop cases are all in open domain and downloadable(
www.gothenburg2010.org) and the experimental data are available, these cases would be good candidates for benchmarks/validations for this interest group.
